Ok, I've got a poem for you which you cannot fail to like:
Ode to a Goldfish by Gyles Brandreth:
O wet pet
and here's another, I've forgotten who it's by:
Little John was not content, Unless he played in wet cement. But one day in someone's yard, He played too long and it set quite hard. His mother didn't want him home, So now he's just a garden gnome.
I'm not big on poetry either. I once when to a totally dramatic poetry reading and I had to leave because I could not contain myself. I silently laughed into my coffee cup, shoulders shaking and tears streaming down my face. People thought I was moved and touched by the poetry. They did not realize I was laughing. I had to go.
Ali, I randomly like poetry. There are poets I absolutely love and others (loved by most) that I dislike. Anyway, I prefer proze to poetry and I need a certain feeling and state of mind to enjoy it properly.
But, I am sure you like certain song lyrics, which is quite close to poetry, so being a freak is out!:D
Okay, I confess there are a few poems I do enjoy. Most are in Shel Silverstein's book "Where the Sidewalk Ends" that was obligatory reading in my elementary school class. Safiya, they are along the lines of the poems you suggested here.
There are some simple haikus that I appreciate as well.
What I object to are those super profound, emotion-ridden, long-winded musings about whatever the topic at hand...the more abstract the poem the less I have patience for it.
And yes, I do like some song lyrics but strangely they are not what I pay attention to in music. For example, I enjoy a lot of cheezy pop music that is great to dance to, but has lyrics that embody what I dislike about most poetry but minus the talent.
i must say that i was one of those people who didn't like poetry...seriously. but then a few months ago i discovered a poem (derek walcott's "love after love") and it changed my life. and i started to seek out other poets. and suddenly everything was different for me. there are poems you would like i bet. and silverstein is fantastic! but there are still poems i don't get. at all. so i just turn the page. or pick up another book. or surf to another blog. and i agree that abstract poems are, well, in my words, irritating at times.

Dear Ali, there are people who never liked reading, much less writing, who now write "poetry" - now THAT is freaky! :)
ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!!! What a great post! Thank you!
Really? Not at all?

Actually, maybe that last one is a bit creepy.

HA! You just made coffee come out of my nose.
I hear you. I like SOME poetry -- SOME -- but the vast majority of it seems to be solipsistic & navel-gazing and I don't like it, either!
